Honouring the Late John Horgan

Date

We are deeply saddened by the passing of John Horgan. Known to many British Columbians and Canadians as a committed public servant, John represented Langford–Juan de Fuca as MLA and served as Premier of British Columbia from 2017 to 2022, before becoming Canada’s Ambassador to Germany in 2023.

To our students and staff, however, he was simply "John from Langford."John Horgan

When John was elected as MLA in 2005, the Sooke School District gained a dedicated advocate and, at times, a constructive critic. He later mentored young student Ravi Parmar, inspiring Ravi’s passion for public service. Under John’s guidance, Ravi became a Trustee for the Sooke School District, the youngest Board Chair in British Columbia, and, in 2023, MLA for Langford–Juan de Fuca—succeeding John as he stepped back from his role.

John’s advocacy at the provincial level led to the largest period of capital investment our district has seen, with the construction of two secondary schools, a middle school, an elementary school, the approval for the seismic replacement of Port Renfrew Elementary, and the acquisition of land for future schools on the Westshore.

Outside of legislative chambers, John always made time for our students and staff. Whether stopping by classes to chat with students, cheering on graduates at ceremonies, pushing swings, jumping into goal to block soccer shots, decorating cookies, or reading to young students, he remained grounded and ever-present. His commitment to people, especially the students of our district, was felt in everything he did.

We are incredibly honoured to have known "John from Langford." His legacy is one of transformative growth and enduring dedication. The Sooke School District will always remember his contributions with gratitude and respect.

On behalf of the entire district, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Ellie, and his sons, Evan and Nate, as well as to his friends, former colleagues, and all British Columbians who mourn his passing.

We will miss John from Langford, and his legacy will continue to shape our district for generations to come.
